The Ternary Alkaline-Earth Metal Manganese Bismuthides Sr2MnBi2 and Ba2Mn1–xBi2 (x ≈ 0.15)

Sr2MnBi2 is a Zintl phase with a layered structure, synthesized and characterized for the first time. First-principle calculations and magnetization measurements show that this electron-balanced compound is a frustrated magnetic semiconductor displaying low-dimensional exchange interactions. Ba2Mn1−xBi2 (x ≈ 0.15) represents an electron-excessive phase, which adopts its own crystal structure type with more than 30 symmetrically independent atoms and pronounced disorder.
