Successive Phase Transitions in Fe2+ Ladder Compounds Sr2Fe3Ch2O3 (Ch = S, Se)

Pure single crystals and polycrystals of Sr2Fe3Ch2O3 (Ch = S, Se) were successfully synthesized, and their physical properties were characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, thermodynamics, and magnetometry. Both compounds contain a novel hybrid spin ladder which represents a combination of a 2-leg rectangular ladder and a necklace ladder. They show three successive phase transitions between 40 and 120 K, demonstrating the complex magnetic behaviors induced by their unique ladder topology.
