Smart homes based in the IoT paradigm are becoming popular, where common objects develop into sophisticated and smart appliances that make the lives of people easier, more efficient, and practical. These devices are built to be autonomous according to the users' preferences and needs. This paper focuses primarily on smart curtains that are designed to improve the comfort and security of the residents. The curtain is made of a smart fabric that has LEDs embedded in it. It also consists of light, temperature, and PIR sensors that are placed as a single unit in the curtain. This device is controlled by the users' smartphone application, which is a very straightforward approach. The device data is uploaded to the cloud which can then be accessed by the mobile application and vice versa. Apart from functioning as a regular curtain, it aims at controlling the indoor light intensity based on ambient lighting conditions and turning the AC ON/OFF with respect to ambient temperature. It also alerts the user through an alarm and app notification in case of fire or intrusion when the security mode is ON. A prototype of the same was designed and tested for different modes, temperature, and lighting conditions.
